ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Have you ever heard the story of Medusa? Medusa,a once a stunning woman, visits the temple of Athena to offer prayers. Persistent in his desire to be with the beautiful maiden, Apollo rapes her. Outraged that her temple was violated, Athena finds Medusa guilty and punishes her. She turns her into an ugly, snake-haired monster who turns people into stones when stared at. Does this tale ring a bell with you? Aren't women who are murdered, raped, and abused also found guilty and dirty?

According to a Middle Eastern interpretation of the legend, Medusa was so stunning that the symmetry of her face caused those who couldn't stop staring at her to turn into stones. I refuse the western version of this story. She is not dirty. She is not guilty. She is not ugly. She is awe-srtikenly beautiful and pure.

Although I define myself as "Androgénie" [a term coined by me meaning androgynous, genie, and génie (genius and guardian spirit in French)], I was raised as a woman before discovering my identity. The woman I was expected to become was not fun. Being that woman means obeying men. To be that woman means that I am guilty if a man sexually harrasses me for being in that place and wearing whatever I am wearing. To be that woman means I shouldn’t complain about problems, I shouldn’t speak up amongst men, I should cook for men and clean after them. To be that woman means I cannot live my sexuality freely or else I will be the dirty slut that no man wants to marry. To be that woman means I shouldn’t educate myself and achieve more than men because they won't want to be with a woman who is smarter and more successful than they. To be that woman was suffocating. And it took time to unlearn these tabus and to learn my rights, enhance my power and understand myself as a woman*.
